Twenty-Six

With the bathroom mirror gone, Mia didn’t have to look at herself. She darkened, just a bit. And completely responsible for this was Eury, coming from wherever. She feared her reflection. What Maddy said and what she did on the rooftop to the couple by the pool, on her own accord, made things worse.

She felt the darkness slithering around inside her. Cole was her balance. She touched his mark on her back and smiled at the onslaught of a beautiful memory. After he had marked her, he showed her his symbol. It was so beautiful. She’d never understand how vampires could manipulate internal blood vessels, but Cole seemed to be a master at it. His symbol, the one that graced her lower back, was a double spiral. “It’s the dance of life, Mia. It’s similar to the taijitu, the yin and yang, representing unity of opposites. Decay, renewal”—he’d kissed her then before continuing—“life, death.” Unity of opposites. That did describe the two of them When she asked him, “Am I your yin or yang?” his response stole her breath. “You’re my everything.” His eyes were so intense, she’d felt his words to her core.

She was deeply in love with him. He completed her in every way. She’d always dreamed of having her own fairytale. Looking at her ring, she smiled. Yes, it was tainted with someone else’s stone, but the action, the symbol of it, was still there. The image of Cole on one knee, with a ring, it encircles a part of you, making the connection stronger—deeper—like a vow. She had her fairytale, although hers was a little different—a little darker—a little paranormal. But she’d have it no other way, because just like one of her favorite fairytales, every beauty needed a beast.

She grabbed her shirt and inhaled his scent. Something else rode on the aroma of Cole. It was something so ordinary for Florida, especially on the East Coast. Saltwater mixed with a tinge of seaweed—Mia smelled the sea. The smell of salt would carry for a couple miles inland, but seaweed…he was closer to the ocean or the intercostal.

“I think I have a clue to where he is,” she announced as she opened the door to the bathroom and rejoined the group.

“I don’t think it’s a good idea for you to go find Cole,” Maddy said. “We don’t know exactly what Eury is up to. Honestly, he’s never been this organized.”

John dragged his hand down his face and sighed. “I need to feed.” Maddy stiffened beside him. A sly smile pulled at the edge of his mouth. With a wink he said, “We don’t have time for that kind of feeding, Maddy girl, but soon.”

“If Eury is here, what difference does it make if I look for Cole?” Mia’s hands went to her hips. “If he’s already here…”

Monika moved to stand next to Russo. His stance tightened at her closeness, and he rubbed his hand over his chest at his heart. Mia stared at his action, then her gaze snapped to his.
